WEST END READER’S CHOICE AWARDS - BEST MARTINI

Here’s what the critics have to say about us...

Frommer’s
Walk down the steps from the Denman Place Mall and you've entered Delilah's, a somewhat Victorian-looking place with private corner rooms, cherubim cavorting on the ceiling, and wall-mounted lamps with glass shades. First order of business is a martini -- Delilah's forte, and the fuel firing the laughter and conversation all around. The menu is seafood heavy, which Delilah's does well, sticking to freshness and simple sauces. The Saltspring Island mussels steamed in a chipotle cream are worth trying. The chef gets in a bit over his head with land-based fare, although the grilled beef tenderloin on roast potatoes with veal stock, stilton, foie gras butter, and fresh horseradish is a winner. The staff is brisk and helpful.

Vancouver Magazine
The contemporary cooking and prix-fixe menus are grabby (and so's the crowd), but this infamous spot is better known for its martinis and over-the-top atmosphere. On a given night, the clientele might include impersonators (people who love people), entertainers, West Enders and, of course, lots of big-eyed tourists, whether from Brandon or Burnaby. 1789 Comox St., 687-3424. $$$

Fodor’s Review
Cherubs dance on the ceiling, candles flicker on the tables, and martini glasses clink during toasts at this jovially decadent West End spot. The two velvet booths with curtains are romantic favorites. The contemporary cuisine, served in two- or four-course prix-fixe dinners, is innovative and artfully presented. Though the menu changes frequently, the Szechuan-style rack of lamb is a long-standing favorite. AE, DC, MC, V. No lunch.

Best Martinis: At Delilah's, 1789 Comox St. (tel. 604/687-3424), a two-page menu includes such lovelies as a Black Widow, a Boston Tea Partini, and the Edsel (soaked in lemon), all served in the wonderfully decadent lounge.
